Let’s make this Eskymo country this week

Some of you are old enough to remember the 1979 and 1981 Escanaba football teams. I remember traveling to watch the playoffs in ’79. The Lansing Sexton game was almost all Escanaba fans. The Silverdome was rockin U.P. Power in ’79. We were all disappointed at the outcome, but extremely proud. In 1981, I was in Marquette. We listened to the final in our car sitting in the Shopko parking lot. It was about the only place we could get reception. Those memories will never fade.

Friday night, Escanaba will host another playoff game. Win or lose, this team deserves a proper send-off. For some, it will be the last time they get to play football in front of their home crowd. I will be there showing these guys how proud I am that they are from Escanaba. And don’t forget the cheerleaders. It will probably be cold, but the cheerleaders will be out there giving it their all. The band will “shiver through” their halftime performance. And we will try and keep warm. But that’s what high school football is all about. It’s about the kids. It’s about the memories.

I have seen one restaurant with a “Go Eskymos” on their electronic sign. I would hope by Friday that every sign in town shows support of “our team,” and at the same time, show the fans and players of Williamston how special Escanaba is.

When you go to Green Bay on game day, the whole city, the whole area, is Packer Country. Let’s make this Eskymo country this week!
