Don’t be in the dark about diabetes
November is National Diabetes Month and this year’s theme is “You are the center of your diabetes care team.”
The incidence of diabetes is increasing. All persons with diabetes should see a diabetes educator yearly as recommended by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) and the American Diabetes Association. Medicare and most private insurances will pay for diabetic education if it is provided by an accredited program.
There are three accredited programs in Escanaba. One is at UP Health System Doctor’s Park; the educator is Lori Moreau (789-5978). Another is at Bellin Health (786-6488). The third is at UPCAP; contact is Tonya LaFave at 786-4701. Any information about these programs or others in the area can be obtained by calling 211.
Everyone with diabetes should make an appointment to see an educator. Remember, you may need a referral from your healthcare provider.
