Lucy ‘Lu’ M. Pearce

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Lucy “Lu” M. Pearce, a94, of Pompano Beach, Fla., and previously a resident of Coral Springs, Fla., and Escanaba, Mich., passed away on Friday morning, March 1, 2019, at Vitas Hospice in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Lu was born on June 7, 1924, in Garden, Mich., the daughter of James and Lucy (Truckee) Adams. She grew up in Garden and was the valedictorian of her Garden High School graduating class. Lu was captain of her high school basketball team, which won the U.P. Girls Basketball Championship. Following high school, Lu moved to Chicago to live with her aunt and to support the World War II war effort as a “Rosie the Riveter.” After

returning to the U.P., Lu married Mr. Wilmore “Bill” K. Berglund on April 25, 1953, at Central United Methodist Church in Escanaba. Lu and Bill spent time enjoying their home in Escanaba, traveling around the Upper Peninsula, golfing, and spending time at their camp on the Whitefish River. Bill preceded Lu in death on Nov. 12, 1963. Lu was married again in 1969 to Don Pearce of Marquette, Mich. Lu and Don split their time together between their homes and businesses in the U.P. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., until Don passed away in 1986. Lu had a successful career in real estate sales and real estate appraisal, beginning in Escanaba and carrying on throughout her working years in Florida — including the establishment and management of Pearce and Pearce Realty in Coral Springs, Fla. Lu and Don owned travel agencies in the U.P. as well as in Florida — and she felt very fortunate to see so many parts of the U.S. and foreign lands traveling with Don. Lu was also a partner for a number of years in the Escanaba Donut Connection. Throughout her life, Lu worked hard to excel at the personal and professional endeavors she set out to accomplish — golfing champion, real estate sales, appraiser, Broward County Value Adjust Board Special Master, cook, and hostess. Lu was an avid Packer-Backer.

Lucy M. Pearce is survived by her sons, John Pearce of Irving, Texas, Jim Pearce of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Doug Pearce of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Marquette, Mich.; numerous grandchildren; her sister, Ann Olson of Albuquerque, N.M. and Munising, Mich.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Lu was preceded in death by her husbands, Bill Berglund and Don Pearce; son, Steve Berglund; daughter, Mary (Berglund) O’Connell; and siblings, Robert Adams, Ruth Beck, James Adams, Jeanette Beauchamp, Alvin Adams, and Alan Adams.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Friday, March 8, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Lu will follow at 12 p.m. Friday in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Elise Low Edwardson officiating. A reception for family and friends will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at Pacino’s Food and Spirits in Escanaba. Entombment will take place in the Gardens of Rest Mausoleum. The family encourages gifts and donations be made to a charitable institution of the donor’s choice in Lu’s name.
