Robert P. ‘Bob’ Cappeart

ESCANABA — Robert P. “Bob” Cappeart, 90, of Escanaba, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.

Bob, son of Josephine (Tomasini) Giannunzio, was born on Feb. 27, 1928 in Norway. He graduated from Norway High School in 1945.

Bob worked at Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee, Wis. until he was inducted into the military in March 1946. He served three years in Military Air Transport Service as a Staff Sergeant including two years in Japan at Haneda Air Base, near Tokyo.

On Dec. 2, 1950, Bob married the love of his life, Annice Gray at St. Mary’s Church in Norway. Together they celebrated 64 wonderful years and raised their five children. She preceded him in death on Jan. 23, 2015.

Bob attended Michigan Tech in Houghton from 1949 to 1953. He graduated with a B.S. in civil engineering. He was instrumental in designing the north approach to the Mackinac Bridge and U.S. 2 from Escanaba to Rapid River.

He was a long time member of St. Anthony’s Church and the Highland Golf Club, Promenades, and Merry Mixers Square Dance Club. He enjoyed playing baseball, skiing, hunting, and golfing. He was a Tigers and Packer fan.

Among survivors are his children, Mary (Jack) Thomma, Robert (Judy) Jr., Michael , David (Debbie), and Donald (Tammy) all of Escanaba; many grandchildren, great grandchildren; half-brothers, Douglas (Carolyn) Giannunzio of Pulaski, Wis., Gary (Jeri) Giannunzio of Norway, Mich., and Jim Giannunzio of Addy, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother; wife; brother, Leonard; step-father, Romeo; brother-in-law, Roy Johnson; and brother-in-law, Richard Gray.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 22 from 2:30 to 4:15 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military rites will be at 4:15 p.m. with the Delta County Veterans Council. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Church in Wells with Rev. Rick Courier officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed to the family. A memorial will be established at a later date.
