Mary Helen Anthony

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Mary Helen Anthony, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, passed away peacefully following a brief illness on Dec. 16, 2017, with family by her side. She had just celebrated her 99th birthday.

Mary Helen was born Dec. 6, 1918, in Benton Harbor, Mich., the daughter of William and Wilma Grahl. She grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and graduated from Albuquerque High School. Mary Helen earned her bachelors degree from the University of New Mexico, majoring in arts and English.

She was married to William Wallrich and resided in Chicago. During her professional career she worked for corporations and was the art director at Amphenol-Borg. Later she joined her daughter and son-in-law in Germany where she was a teacher to the GI’s. In 1976, she married W. John Anthony and relocated to Escanaba.

Mary Helen was active in Escanaba Yacht Club, Women’s Club, Bonifas Art Center, and enjoyed attending art events with her friends. Together with W. John they traveled the world and spent summers sailing Lake Michigan.

Following the death of W. John Anthony in 2002, Mary Helen moved to Tucson, Ariz., and lived with her son, Hack. In 2015, she moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, and resided with her daughter, Chris.

Mary Helen is survived by children, Hack Wallrich (Ned Gray), Christina (James) Bauch and grandchildren Jed (Bobby-Jean) Bauch, Melissa (John) Ticknor, Suzanne (Scott) Dutcher, and Deborah Dutcher; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Elizabeth Bauch.

She is also survived by her step family Mary (Gene) Sherman, Eileen (Clint) Vocke, John (Mary) Anthony, and David (Cindy) Anthony; grandchildren, Alissa (Sam) Miller, Rebecca Sherman and fiance Mike Culberson-Fehling, Katherine (Dan) Trone, Laura (Tom) Alterman, and Joseph Vocke, James Anthony, Madelyn (C.J.) Schmidt, Michael Anthony, and Claire (Andy) Larsen, Tyler Anthony and Joshua Anthony; great-grandchild, Natalie Trone.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by W. John Anthony and her brother, James Grahl.

A family memorial gathering will be held at a later date in Escanaba where she will be buried at Lakeview Cemetery.
