Leo Lloyd Walter

COOKS — Leo Lloyd Walter, 89, of 10307W State Highway M-149, Cooks, Mich., died Jan. 24, 2018, at his home in Inwood Township surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 10, 1928, in Cooks, Mich., the son of Matthew and Louisa (Leveille) Walter and attended school there. He was a graduate of the Cooks High School with the Class of 1946.

On March 18, 1947, he married the former M. Lorraine Savage in Escanaba, Mich. They made their home and raised their family in Cooks.

Leo started his working career with the Soo Line Railroad, but soon thereafter became an operator on road construction. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 324 for 65 years.

He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, the Cooks Fire Department, and was a charter member of the Manistique Moose Lodge 1972. He enjoyed golfing, riding snowmobiles, fishing, hunting, and shooting pool. He made beautiful cribbage and euchre boards that are a treasure to family members and friends. Leo loved to tell stories and entertain others. He was a kind-hearted man with the utmost integrity, determination, and perseverance.

Leo Lloyd is survived by his wife, M. Lorraine Walter of Cooks; children, Sherry Walter of Gilbert, Ariz., Steve Walter of Cooks, and Robin Bonnell of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Anthony Parks, Jafar Muridan, and Steven Berghoef; great grandchildren, Makensey and Emaley Muridan; brother, Leland (Linda) Walter of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; along with nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Veronica LeBresh, Lucille Fox, and Matthew Walter.

A celebration of Leo Lloyd Walter’s life will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the Inwood Township Hall in Cooks, Mich. A time of sharing memories and stories will begin at 5 p.m.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Eva Burrell Animal Shelter in Manistique, to the Cooks Congregational Church, or to the St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Cooks.
