Walter J. “Jack” Casey

ESCANABA — Walter J. “Jack” Casey, 87, of Escanaba, passed away early Friday morning May 26, 2017, at OSF St. Francis Hospital.

He was born on April 14, 1930, in Escanaba, son of Walter and Agnes (Michaud) Casey. He was raised in Wells and was a graduate of Escanaba High School. He also attended Cloverland College for two years where he studied Electronics.

Jack served in the National Guard and then was deployed into the Marines until his honorable discharge in 1953. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

On Dec. 12, 1951, Jack married Patricia Moreau at All Saints Church in Gladstone. Together they shared over 67 years together.

Jack was first employed with the City of Escanaba as a fireman and later became a public safety officer. He worked several years as an independent television and appliance repairman, set up voting machines for Delta County, and also for Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a brakeman. He was truly a “Jack of all trades.”

He was a skilled wood carver and enjoyed fishing, camping, and world traveling. Jack and Pat wintered in the Gulf Shores for many years. The times he enjoyed the most were attending his grandchildren’s events and being with his family.

Jack was an active member of St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister and an Altar Server. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Elks Lodge 354 and AmVets.

Jack is survived by his wife, Patricia of Escanaba; children, David (Gail) of Kingsford, Mary Beth Smith of DePere, Wis., Michael (Debra) of Escanaba, Steven (Marcia) of Green Bay, Gayle (Jay) DeShambo of Escanaba and Rick (Nanette) of Green Bay; grandchildren, Patrick, Eric, Danielle, Brent, Katherine, Ryan, Kelly, Kristie, Matthew, Sarah, Casey and Leah; several step grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Lawrence “Bud” Casey; brother-in-law, Richard Moreau; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Patrick Joseph; grandson, Mitchel Jon; sister, Joanne (William) Berro; father- and mother-in-laws, Joseph and Esther Moreau; and sisters-in-law, Donna Moreau, Janet Ryan and Marlene Casey.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 30 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. Military rites will be at 3 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at St. Joseph and St. Patrick Church with Rev. Eric Olson and Rev. Rick Courier officiating. A meal will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
