Thelma Corinne Carlson

Thelma Corinne Carlson

TRENARY — Thelma Corinne Carlson, age 86, of Trenary, was taken to her eternal home on Thursday evening, March 23, 2017 at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. She was born on May 8, 1930 to the late Carl and Kathleen (Kaiser) Holmquist of Trenary.

Thelma graduated from Trenary High School in 1948. She married Bob Carlson on Oct. 30, 1948. They enjoyed sixty-five years of marriage. The first twenty-five years they spent on their dairy farm in Limestone. After the farm was sold, they moved to Trenary where Thelma was always involved in church and community service. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, a Lioness, Home Extension, and the 4-H knitting leader. Throughout her life, she was a devoted homemaker taking care of her family, friends, and neighbors. After Bob’s retirement, they took up camping at Bass Lake and AuTrain Basin. They made many friends and enjoyed all the fish fries and time spent around the campfire.

Anyone who knew Thelma was blessed to have one of her “scrubbies” and dishcloths. She wore the tile of “Scrubby Lady” proudly. Thelma was an avid crafter and knitter. There probably wasn’t a family in the area who did not own a pair of mittens, baby booties and hat set, towels, amazing winter socks or something that she had made. Most of all she enjoyed knitting for her grandchildren.

Thelma is survived by her daughters, Joyce (Mike) Matula of Marquette, and Diane (Jim) Nelson of Menominee; five grandchildren, Ryan (Amanda) Matula of Kaukauna, Wis., Nikki (Burt) Clement of Ishpeming, James Nelson of Lansing, Amanda (Eric) Thompson of Oak Park, and Annie (Nick) Nelson of Grand Rapids; great-grandchildren, Brendan, Emilea, and Nora Matula, Jadynn Clement, Penny and David Thompson, and Charlie Nelson; brothers, Eugene, Keith, and Bruce Holmquist; sisters-in-law, Ethel Holmquist and Lois Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Kathleen Holmquist; husband, Bob; sister, Neola (Eugene) Juntunen; brother, Gordon Holmquist; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Mary Holmquist.

Services will be held on Monday, March 27 at the United Methodist Church in Trenary. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Pastor Sandra Kolder will conduct Thelma’s funeral service at 1 p.m. Interment will be at the Mathias Township cemetery. Escorts will be sons-in-law Mike Matula and Jim Nelson and grandsons Ryan Matula, James Nelson, Eric Thompson, and Nick Nelson.

In lieu of flowers, condolences may be sent to the family care of Joyce Matula, 120 Kellogg Street, Marquette, Michigan 49855.
