Marvin A. Horchner
ESCANABA — Marvin A. Horchner, 85 of Escanaba, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born on Feb. 27, 1931 in Escanaba, the son of Arthur and Adele (Sandermann) Horchner.
Marvin grew up in Escanaba and worked at Montgomery Ward while attending high school. He also boxed in the Golden Gloves during high school. Marvin was a member of the Escanaba High School graduating class of 1952. Following graduation, Marvin enlisted in the U.S. Air Force to serve in the Korean War until his honorable discharge on Aug. 4, 1960. He married the former Mary Helen Swann on Sept. 29, 1956 in Central City, Ky. and she preceded him in death on Nov. 4, 2000. The couple shared 44 years of marriage together. Marvin worked for Mead Paper for 30 years as an oiler and finisher until his retirement in 1989. While serving in the Air Force he earned many medals including the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. In 2007, Marvin was awarded Legionnaire of the Year by the American Legion Post 82 in Escanaba. He was a member of the DAV, the American Legion Post 82, a lifetime member of the VFW 2998, the Mead 25 Year Club, the Local Union 110 Papermakers, and part of the Athletic Committee for Escanaba. Marvin enjoyed playing his harmonica, especially during get-togethers, and loved to spend time with family and friends.
Marvin A. Horchner is survived by two daughters, Linda (Kim) McClinchy of Waynesville, Ohio, and Sherri Horchner of Escanaba; grandson, Chuck McClinchy; three brothers, Roger (Lois) Horchner of Reed City, Mich., Gerald (Sue) Horchner of Lewisville, Texas, and Dale (Jan) Horchner of St. Louis, Mo.; special family friends, Fred and Peggy Baumler and their children, Holly, Eric, and Raymond and their families of Bark River; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Marvin will follow at 2 p.m., Saturday, at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Doletzky officiating. A luncheon will be served afterward in the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
