MANISTIQUE — Lorraine M. Vaughan, 89, of Manistique (Indian Lake), passed away peacefully on Jan. 12, 2017 at the Hidden Estates Home in Manistique where she has resided for the past three years.

She was born Sept. 24, 1927 in Iron Mountain, the daughter of Rosario “Joe” and Viola (Dessart) Poupore, and moved to the Cooks area as a child. She attended school in Cooks and was a graduate of the Cooks High School.

On Sept. 26, 1950 the former Lorraine M. Poupore married Richard J. Vaughan at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Cooks. They moved to Manistique following Dick’s military service and raised their family here. Dick preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 2010.

Lorraine and Dick owned and operated Vaughan’s Grocery on Manistique’s west side for many years and also became the owner/operators of Hovey’s Bear Trap Resort at Indian Lake.

Lorraine was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and the time she was able to spend with Dick and her family. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique.

Lorraine is survived by her children, Karen (Jim) Christie of Manistique, James (Margaret) Vaughan of Gulfport, Miss., Randy Vaughan of Gulliver, and Dan Vaughan of Manistique; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Gerard (Gail) Poupore of Cooks and Francis (Joan) Poupore of Cloquet, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Eloise Poupore of Manistique and Barbara Poupore of L’Anse; along with nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bernard, Joseph, and Vernon Poupore.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Parish Prayers will be said at 6 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 19 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique with Father Ben Paris officiating.

Burial will be held in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
