Virginia Mae Linjala
ROCK – Virginia Mae Linjala suffered a heart attack and died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, with family by her side at U.P. Health Systems in Marquette.
The former Virginia Mae Hill was born on May 27, 1929, to Toivo and Hilma (Salo) Hill in Rudyard. Later that year, her family moved to Rock.
Virginia married Walter William Linjala, the love of her life, on Nov. 25, 1946, in Escanaba. Her sister, Darlene Hill, and Ed Ahlgren witnessed the wedding.
Virginia was a housewife and also worked in the woods with her husband, who was a logger, farmer, carpenter and mechanic.
The couple had five children who were born within six years. They raised their family in West Rock. Virginia enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing, reading and crossword puzzles. She was a strong woman who loved her family who meant everything to her.
Virginia and Walter were married for 35 years prior to his death in 1981. Their oldest daughter, Karen Richards, died in 1979. Also proceeding Virginia in death were her two brothers, Gerald Hill and Vern Hill, her three sisters, Doris Aalto, Darlene Ahlgren, and Linda Jokela, and a grandson, Jesse Burney.
Surviving family members include: her children, Jeanne (Kenneth) LeDuc of Escanaba, Judith Burney of Wells, Thomas Linjala of Rock, and John (Yvonne Jokela) Linjala, of Rock; her grandchildren, Vanessa Tillman of Atlantic Beach, Fla., Kenny LeDuc of Escanaba, Lisa (John) Martin of Gladstone, Michael LeDuc of Escanaba, Karen (Ray “Bear”) Phillips of Escanaba, Collin Burney of Wells, and Heather (Joel) Jacobs of San Francisco, Calif.; her great-grandchildren, Catherine Tillman, Alyssa Tillman, Emily Martin, Logan Martin, Johnny Phillips, Jesse Phillips, Katy Scales and Nathan Burney; and step-great-grandchildren, Morgan Phillips, Danielle Niemela, Alex Niemela and Logan Jacobs.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Rock Bible Chapel in Rock. Memorial funeral services celebrating the life of Virginia Mae Linjala will be held 5 p.m. Sunday at the Rock Bible Chapel.
A luncheon will be served following the funeral services. Burial will take place in the Rock Cemetery. The Anderson Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Linjala family with the arrangements and online condolences can be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralhomes.net.
