Lena Mae Gilroy

MONTROSE, Mich. – Lena Mae Gilroy, 90, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 14, 2015. The long time Gulliver resident passed away at the MediLodge of Montrose, Mich. Lena was born in Manistique, Mich., on April 22, 1925, to William P. and DeEtta Rice. She attended area schools and graduated from Manistique High School with the class of 1942. On Nov. 11, 1942, she married Bernie D. Gilroy in Port Huron, Mich. They enjoyed many years together until Bernie preceded her in death on May 18, 2002.

Lena worked for a number of years at the Wyman Nursery, and as deputy county clerk/register of deeds for Schoolcraft County, retiring from that position after 26 years of service on Jan. 1, 1984. She was also a member of the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Jury Commission.

She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church for many years and taught Sunday School there as well. Later, she became a member of the United Methodist Church in Manistique.

Lena is survived by three sons, Dwight (Catherine) Gilroy of Mecosta, Mich., David (Mary Lou) of Rodney, Mich., Donald (Linda) of China, Mich.; and by daughter, Deena (Eliot) Brace of Huntington, Ind.; as well as 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Elvira Sebright of Manistique; and also a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband; she was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Smith, DeEtta Smith, and Fern Schnurer; and five brothers, Leon Rice, William Rice, Robert Rice, Raymond Rice, and Clifford Rice.

Visitation and a memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 17, at the New Lothrop Church of the Nazarene, 7406 S. Saginaw Road, New Lothrop, Mich. Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service and lunch.

Burial will be at a later date in the Lakeview Cemetery in Manistique.

During her long life, Lena enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, playing cards, knitting, crocheting, traveling and especially spending time with family and friends.
