Escanaba switches date of fireworks

ESCANABA — Escanaba’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display won’t be happening on the Fourth of July this year. Because the city did not receive bids from any fireworks companies to set off a display on the Fourth, the date of the display had to be moved to Saturday, July 6, in Ludington Park.

“For the past 15 years, we only received one bid for our fireworks display. This year, that company did not bid. We reached out to several other companies and the only option for a fireworks display was to have it on July 6. All the fireworks companies are already established with other communities. The city of Escanaba was fortunate to receive the proposal for July 6,” said Escanaba Recreation Department Director Kim Peterson.

The rest of Escanaba’s traditional Fourth of July celebration will be held on Thursday, July 4, in Ludington Park. They include the Escanaba City Band, Jaws of Life demonstration, K9 demonstration and food vendors.

“We still encourage everyone to come down to the park to celebrate the Fourth of July,” Peterson said.

Friday, July 5, and Saturday, July 6, will feature the Rock the Dock event in Ludington Park with local bands, bounce houses, food vendors and carnival games.
