Bay looks at filling board position

ESCANABA — Former Bay College Board of Trustees Chair William Lake’s resignation from the board officially went into effect earlier this week. Board members made decisions related to this during the board’s meeting Wednesday.

Lake’s last official day as a member of the Bay College Board of Trustees was April 15. He left the board, which he served on for 12 years, to move closer to family members outside of Delta County.

The proposed adoption of a new slate of board officers was discussed by the board Wednesday. The slate called for Thomas Butch to be named the board’s chair, Eric Lundin to be the board’s vice-chair, Philip Strom to be the board’s secretary and Stephen Davis to be the board’s treasurer.

The Bay College Board of Trustees uses a rotation system to determine board officer positions. Currently, the positions of vice-chair, secretary and treasurer are held by Butch, Lundin and Strom, respectively.

As the board does not typically rotate officers mid-year, its members voted unanimously to table the adoption of the proposed slate of officers until it could be discussed in greater detail to avoid any unintended conflict.

“It has to be given some consideration,” Butch said after the meeting.

Since Lake was also the board’s alternate representative to the Michigan Community College Association Board of Directors, the appointment of someone to replace him in this capacity was included on the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting. Trustee Joy Hopkins volunteered to serve in the role.

Additionally, the board approved a resolution of appreciation to Lake Wednesday.

“You’ve been a wonderful mentor and a wonderful Board of (Trustees) member,” Bay College President Laura Coleman said after reading the resolution. Lake was given a lamp featuring Bay’s logo, his name and the years he served on the board during the meeting.

Lake’s seat on the board will be filled by appointment in keeping with state law. Today is the last day applications for the seat are being accepted, and resumes submitted by applicants will be reviewed in the near future.
