New Delta County Treasurer chosen

ESCANABA — Delta County’s next treasurer has been found. In a recent meeting, the Delta County Treasurer Appointment Board unanimously voted to appoint Sherry Godfrey to the position.

On Nov. 8, the board — which consists of Probate Court Judge Robert E. Goebel Jr., Delta County Clerk Nancy J. Kolich, and Chief Prosecuting Attorney Brett Gardner — interviewed five candidates who had applied to fill the remaining term of current Delta County Treasurer Tom Sabor.

Sabor will be retiring on Jan. 4, 2019, and Godfrey will assume her new position on Jan. 7. As there are roughly two years remaining on Sabor’s term, Godfrey will have to run in the 2020 election if she wishes to continue in the role of county treasurer.

Godfrey is a lifelong resident of Delta County and a certified public accountant with the Escanaba-based accounting firm Schneider, Larche, Haapala and Co. PLLC. Currently, she lives in Bark River with her husband, Chris, and their daughter, Greta.

The board’s decision to appoint Godfrey as county treasurer was based on her background in accounting, experience auditing local governments, and computer skills.

“Ms. Godfrey’s skills, commitment to our community, and her engaging personality will serve the Treasurer’s office and our county well,” Kolich stated in a press release.
