Rock man charged in police chase

ESCANABA — A man whose alleged theft of a vehicle prompted a police chase earlier this week was arraigned in Delta County District Court Tuesday.

Jack Robert Lopresto, 37, PO Box 162, Rock, was arrested by the Delta County Sheriff’s Department and lodged at the Delta County Correctional Facility after an incident Monday evening. At about 6:10 p.m., the Delta County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to Escanaba Township for a stolen vehicle complaint. The owner of the vehicle advised her vehicle had been stolen and had last been seen heading northbound on M-35.

At 7:29 p.m., a deputy observed the stolen vehicle traveling in the Boney Falls area. A pursuit ensued southbound on Country Road 426 towards the Carol’s Corner area of Escanaba Township.

A deputy stationed in this area was able to successfully deploy “stop sticks,” which caused both of the stolen vehicle’s driver’s-side tires to gradually deflate.

Lopresto continued eastbound on County Road 420, where his driver’s-side tires both came off of the rim. He then failed to negotiate the curve at the top of South Hill Road and drove off the roadway into the “bowl area.”

He crossed over South Hill Road and entered the ditch before he was able to enter back onto South Hill Road. He then lost control and went into the ditch at South Hill Road and U.S. 2 and 41, ending the pursuit.

Lopresto was arraigned Tuesday on charges of motor vehicle — unlawful driving away (a five-year felony), police officer — fleeing, fourth degree, and driving reckless.

A $10,000 cash or surety bond was set for Lopresto. He is not to drive, and he is not to leave Delta County without the express written permission of the court.

Lopresto is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on July 5 at 10:15 a.m. and a preliminary examination on July 12.
