RAPID RIVER — Memorial Day is Monday, May 28 and in Rapid River there will be no shortage of events and activities. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Freedom for all our… Red, White and Blue.”

A parade, queen crowning, kids games, and much more will be featured on Main Street in Rapid River and at the Masonville Township Park.

To start the celebration, the 10th Annual Run for Joe will be held. Registration opens at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. The race honors Cpl. Joseph Micks, of Rapid River. For registration, contact Amy or Ken Micks at (906) 474-9001.

Prior to the parade, a Memorial Day queen will be crowned at 12:05 p.m. south of Main Street. The parade’s grand marshal will be selected shortly after at 12:45 p.m. at the same location.

Line-up for the parade takes place at noon at the Omni Center, located north of Main Street and will begin at 1 p.m. In addition, guests will have the chance to win a cash prize during a raffle drawing at 5:30 p.m.

Activities in the Masonville Township Park begin at 10 a.m. with Abra Cadabra Arcade Jumps, Splat-U-Later, a petting zoo, food, refreshments and much more.

In addition, the Sons of the Union Veterans will have various displays for visitors to enjoy in the park. A karaoke contest will also take place from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the park’s pavilion.

The Rapid River Lions Club will be serving up hot dogs, French fries, and brats beginning at 10 a.m.

Memorial veteran services are being conducted at various cemeteries in the Rapid River and surrounding area Monday to honor fallen service members. Services will be performed by the Rapid River American Legion Post 301.

Service times and locations are as follows: Ogontz, 8 a.m.; Moss Lake, 8:30 a.m.; Stonington, 10 a.m.; Rapid River, 11 a.m. and Nahma, 9:15 a.m.
