Jury trial leads to jail term for assault

ESCANABA — An Escanaba man was sentenced to 93 days in jail Monday on one count of assaulting a pregnant woman more than a year ago in Masonville Township. The judgment was handed down in Delta County Circuit Court.

John Paul Bichler, 34, was found guilty of the 93-day misdemeanor during a jury trial in December. Jurors found him not guilty of assault by strangulation, a 10-year felony, and not guilty of interfering with electronic communications, a two-year felony.

Bichler was arrested following a Michigan State Police investigation into a Jan. 21, 2017, incident. He posted a $1,000 cash bond and was released from police custody. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim.

In late February 2017, the case was bound over from district court to circuit court where Bichler opted to be tried by a jury.

In addition to the jail sentence, Bichler was ordered to pay $50 in court fees Monday.
