Pedestrian killed in auto accident

HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP — A Palmer man died after being struck by a car as he exited another vehicle on M-95 in Marquette County during poor weather conditions Thursday night, according to the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department.

Cory DeRocha, 33, of Palmer, was a passenger in a friend’s vehicle, which was northbound on M-95 in Humboldt Township at 10 p.m. when the driver pulled over to the side of the road, about three miles south of U.S. 41, and DeRocha exited the vehicle.

When DeRocha left the vehicle, he stepped directly into the path of a southbound car driven by Janey Christiansen, 19, of Iron Mountain, and was struck head on and trapped under Christiansen’s vehicle. DeRocha was pronounced dead at the scene.

Icy roads and low visibility were factors in the crash, according to deputies. One lane of highway was closed for about three hours while the accident scene was investigated.

Agencies assisting the sheriff’s department included Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post, Humboldt Township Fire Department, Humboldt Township First Responders, and U.P. Health Systems Bell Ambulance.
