Explosion, fire send two to hospital with burns

MARQUETTE COUNTY — Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Negaunee Post are investigating a structure fire that resulted in two people being seriously injured ­Thursday.

At 10:54 p.m., troopers were dispatched by Marquette Central Dispatch to a fire at a camp at 58820 Co. Rd. 426 in Wells Twp., in southern Marquette County, after a passerby called 911 when he observed the residence engulfed in flames.

The residence had exploded prior to the 911 call. The cause of the explosion and fire is unknown and currently under investigation.

Subjects injured in the fire were 36-year-old James David Mallon and 40-year-old Danica Lynn Mallon. Both subjects had driven from 58820 Co Rd. 426 to a residence on Pearce Street. in Gwinn before witnesses encountered the subjects and called 911.

Both subjects were transported to UP Health Systems Marquette before being flown to the University of Michigan for treatment of severe burns. Their current status is unknown at this time.

Troopers were assisted in the investigation by Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET), Wells Twp. Fire, Forsyth Twp. EMS, Forsyth Twp. PD and Negaunee Twp. Fire.
