ESCANABA — Pets and their owners will have the opportunity to get in the Christmas spirit during the Delta Animal Shelter’s Christmas open house on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

According to Shelter Manager Susan Gartland, the open house will feature a wide variety of activities including a low cost microchip clinic, low cost nail trimming, adoption specials and much more. Gartland noted having a pet micro-chipped can be beneficial in an emergency situation.

“Mircrochipping is a great way to help a lost animal be reunited,” said Gartland.

For a donation, pets can also have their photos taken with Santa Claus. Gartland explained because Santa is making a stop at the shelter, cookies and milk will be served, in addition to providing treats and toys for the pets who attend.

Photo opportunities are not limited to just dogs, noted Gartland, adding last year the shelter saw a variety of animals get their pictures with Santa including cats and even a bearded dragon lizard.

On top of the other activities, Gartland said the event is also a good opportunity for people to check out what the shelter’s retail store, which has a lot of Christmas gifts for the four-legged members of the family including pet beds, treats, toys, clothes, and much more.

The shelter has also put out a “Christmas Wish List” for those looking to donate items to the shelter. Items include Purina cat or kitten chow, dog wet food, cat litter (clay or scoopable), paper towels, dog harnesses/leashes and Lysol cleaning products. Those wishing to donate items to the shelter can bring them to the shelter on Saturday during the open house or during business hours throughout the week. The shelter is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon until 4 p.m. and Tuesday, and Thursday from noon until 6 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If residents and their furry family members are unable to make Saturday’s open house, Gartland said the shelter will also hold additional photo opportunities with Santa on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Gartland encouraged everyone to come and see the shelter and enjoy the Christmas festivities there this weekend, adding its a great event for parents, kids and pets.
