Escanaba River Bridge to be closed Tuesday

WELLS — Closure of the U.S. 2 and 41 bridge over the Escanaba River to traffic has been set for Tuesday, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The closure is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, and should last until about 9 p.m. the same day.

The closure will be done to allow for the continuous placement of concrete for the bridge’s new westbound span from the existing bridge deck. While the closure was not part of the original schedule for the bridge project, it is expected to save approximately four days of construction time. As the work is weather-dependent, Wednesday, Nov. 29, has been set as an alternate date.

During the closure period, eastbound traffic will be detoured from U.S. 2 via County Roads 426, 420, and 531 and onto M-35 before returning to U.S. 2 — the same detour route that has been used for previous bridge closures. This route will be reversed for westbound traffic.

In the interest of reducing conflicts on the detour route, County Road 420 will be closed to through traffic at the east leg of the intersection with County Road 531. Additionally, Rivers 22nd Road will be closed to westbound traffic between County Road 531 and M-35. Members of local law enforcement will be present at intersections along the detour route to improve traffic flow and reduce backups.
