Rapid River man dies after crash

GARDEN CORNERS — A Rapid River man died as the result of a two-vehicle accident in Garden Corners Monday afternoon, according to Michigan State Police from the Gladstone post and the Manistique detachment which continue to investigate the crash.

Troopers were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 2 and County Road 483 at 4:51 p.m. where a semi truck had collided with a car driven by Donald Kuhr, 61, of Rapid River, according to a news release.

Kuhr was extricated from the vehicle by the Jaws of Life then transported by Rampart Ambulance to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

According to the initial investigation into the crash, police said Kuhr was attempting to turn westbound on U.S. 2 when he failed to stop as he pulled out of the parking lot at Foxy’s Den Convenience Store and was struck by an eastbound semi.

The uninjured semi driver was treated and released from Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital. His name is not being released at this time, said troopers.

State police were assisted at the scene by the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department, the Garden Township Volunteer Fire Department, Nahma Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Department of Natural Resources, Rampart Emergency Medical Services, Tri-County Ambulance, Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Gene’s Towing, and Pro Towing.

A section of U.S. 2, between Federal Highway 13 and County Road 442, was closed for more than three hours due to the accident. The Michigan Department of Transportation established a temporary detour which routed motorists to Hwy. 13 to Hwy. M-28 to Hwy. to M-94 South until U.S. 2 was reopened.
