Disc golf funding over $15,000 mark

GLADSTONE — Work towards establishing a new 54-basket disc golf course at the Gladstone Sports Park has continued with a crowdfunding campaign organized by the Noc Bay Flyers Disc Golf Club. According to Noc Bay Flyers Secretary Rick Elrod, the campaign has been going well.

“We’ve raised over $15,000 so far,” he said — a total which includes pledges. To reach its funding goal of $25,000, the club must raise about $10,000 more before the campaign’s deadline of Oct. 6.

The club’s campaign is being run through Michigan-based website “Patronicity.”

“It’s a crowdfunding website that matches projects up with state programs to provide matching funds,” Elrod said.

If the campaign’s goal is reached, the project will be awarded a matching grant through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC)’s “Public Spaces, Community Places” program.

“We are feeling confident that we’re going to meet our goal,” Elrod said.

Elrod also said Noc Bay Flyers is looking forward to working with the MEDC.

“We’re excited to partner with them to add recreational opportunities in Gladstone and draw in visitors from outside the area,” he said.

As the funding provided to the campaign will go to a fund in the city of Gladstone’s treasury, donations to the campaign will be tax-exempt. People and businesses who make particularly large donations will also be eligible for reward packages. Donors of $300 or more will be “Hole Sponsors,” donors of $1,000 or more will be “Sponsors,” donors of $2,500 or more will be “Core Sponsors,” and donors of $5,000 or more will be “Premier Sponsors.”

The course’s design will be based on a plan created for the course by 2010 Disc Golf World Champion Eric McCabe of Dynamic Course Design. This plan calls for a 27-hole layout with two tee pads and two baskets at each hole.

“He spent about five days walking around the property and came up with a layout that will really utilize the property to its fullest potential,” Elrod said.

Elrod noted that, based on this design, the Gladstone Sports Park’s course will be among the largest disc golf courses in the region.

“It will be one of the biggest and most unique courses in an … (eight-hour) radius,” he said.
