Former Escanaba Public Safety K9 officer dies
ESCANABA — A German shepard named Delila — a former K9 officer at Escanaba Public Safety — recently died, according to the local police department.
Delila began working at Escanaba Public Safety in 2010 with the hiring of Public Safety Officer Gary Sovey, the K9’s handler.
Delia served the department as a multi-purpose detection dog which included narcotics detection, tracking, building and area searches, and handler protection until her retirement in late 2011.
The K9 officer responded to calls for service in the local area as well as throughout the Upper Peninsula and also performed many demonstrations for the public, civic groups, and schools.
While in retirement, Delila enjoyed being pampered by the Sovey family.
