Mini-golf tourney today

ESCANABA — People in the Escanaba area will be able to have a good time while supporting a good cause today. The 10th annual United Way Mini Golf Tournament will be held at Family Fun Park this afternoon.

“It’s unlimited rounds of mini golf between 4 and 7 (p.m.),” United Way of Delta County Executive Director Julie Mallard said.

Admission to the event is $10 for golfers aged 11 or older and $5 for golfers aged 10 and under. All participants will be given a $5 Family Fun Park voucher.

According to Mallard, the proceeds from this event typically go to the United Way of Delta County’s general fund. However, that will not be the case this year.

“This year, the proceeds are earmarked for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library,” she said.

A decade ago, representatives from the United Way of Delta County and Family Fun Park came up with the idea to hold a mini-golf tournament after realizing that no similar events were being held in the area.

“It was just an idea for something fun people could do that would benefit the United Way,” Mallard said.

Since then, this tournament has been held each summer. Mallard said attendance numbers for the tournament have been somewhat unpredictable over the years.

“It’s varied a little bit,” she said. The most heavily-attended United Way Mini Golf Tournament attracted roughly 130 attendees, while the least heavily-attended tournament brought about 75 attendees to Family Fun Park.

So far, about 100 people have pre-registered for this year’s tournament.

“I expect a good turnout this year,” Mallard said.

People who did not pre-register are still encouraged to attend, Mallard said.

“They’re welcome to walk in,” she said.

Mini golf will be the main event at this year’s tournament, and trophies will be given for the best team score and best individual score. However, bucket raffles and cupcakes will also be available.

“For the Love of Cupcakes is donating cupcakes to help us celebrate … 10 years of mini golf,” Mallard said. Anyone who gets a hole-in-one on any hole will be signed up for a special raffle drawing, as well.

While today’s forecast does not call for rain, Mallard said the tournament will go forward as scheduled even if rain does hit the area.

“It’s a rain-or-shine event,” she said.
