No injuries in early morning apartment fire

ESCANABA — Tenants and pets were evacuated from an apartment building in Escanaba where they were trapped by a fire reported early this morning, according to a news release from Escanaba Public Safety.

Firefighters responded to the 3:46 a.m. emergency call regarding thick smoke in an apartment building at 1431 Sheridan Road. Upon arrival, a fire extinguisher was used to knock down flames in a second-story commons area, allowing officers to evacuate two adults, a child, and animals.

The fire was determined to have started in a kitchen where a stove was left on and ignited contents in the room, according to the news release.

“The building sustained fire, water, and smoke damage along with structural damage to windows and doors from forced entry attempting to locate additional trapped victims,” the news release stated. No injuries were reported.

Officers were assisted at the scene by Ford River Fire Department, Rampart Emergency Medical Services, Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, and the American Red Cross.
