Esky council approves equipment purchases

ESCANABA — The Escanaba City Council approved purchases of equipment for the electric and water departments and hired firms to inspect power poles and analyze groundwater during its regular meeting Thursday.

The electric department was granted approval to purchase a 2017 Hitachi compact excavator from Nortrax, Inc. of Escanaba in an amount not to exceed $42,540 as included in the current fiscal year budget.

The excavator, which came in under budget, will be used for trenching and underground boring, explained Electric Superintendent Mike Furmanski.

Council also agreed to purchase a remote control system on a pump at the wastewater treatment plant from Energenecs of Cedarburg, Wis., in an amount not to exceed $8,200.

Karcz Services LLC of Pulaski, Wis., was hired to inspect and treat electrical poles in an amount not to exceed 720 distribution poles or $28,000, as proposed in the budget for the next fiscal year. The agenda item was approved now for the city to be included on the company’s upcoming work schedule.

Council approved the hiring of Geosyntec Consultants of Ann Arbor for an amount not to exceed $15,000 to do additional groundwater testing at the former power plant as requested by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

Furmanski explained the agency requested additional samples of runoff water in a ditch on the property be collected and analyzed during rainfall.
