Jury finds man guilty of lesser assault charge
ESCANABA — A jury declared a Manistique man on trial this week for assaulting a woman in Garden last summer not guilty of felonious assault and guilty of aggravated assault, a one-year misdemeanor, in Delta County Circuit Court on Thursday.
The trial of Sharron Lee Taylor, 25, began Tuesday with jury selection, opening statements, and witness testimony. Following more witness testimony Wednesday and Thursday, closing arguments were presented by the prosecution and defense.
The jury deliberated for two hours and 40 minutes Thursday afternoon before reaching a not guilty verdict on the felonious assault charge and a guilty verdict on the aggravated assault charge.
Taylor was arrested on Oct. 12 last year following investigation into a June 20, 2016 incident when he allegedly assaulted and injured a female victim with a beer bottle in Garden Township. After his arrest, Taylor posted $500 — 10 percent of a $5,000 bond — and was released from police custody.
He was later bound over from district court to circuit court on the two assault charges. During a hearing in circuit court, he opted to be tried on the four-year felony and one-year misdemeanor rather than make a plea.
Taylor’s sentencing on the misdemeanor is scheduled for April 26 in circuit court.
