Girl found naked in ditch

RAPID RIVER — Officials removed two young girls from an unsafe and unsanitary home in Rapid River Friday after one of the girls — a three-year-old — was found lying naked in a ditch during cold temperatures earlier that day.

The three-year-old was found by a local resident whose dog alerted him of the child in the ditch Friday morning when temperatures were around 32 degrees, according to the Delta County Sheriff’s Department which responded to the report of the found child.

According to a news release issued by the sheriff’s department this morning, the man who found the girl had wrapped her in his shirt and rushed her to his home where he attempted to warm the child and also notified law enforcement.

An ambulance from UP Health Systems transported the girl to OSF St. Francis Hospital. Her condition was unavailable prior to press time today.

After responding to the emergency, deputies went door to door to residences in the area in an attempt to contact the child’s parents who were eventually located at a nearby home.

“Further investigation unveiled unsafe and unsanitary living conditions at the residence. Child Protective Services was contacted and the found girl, along with another young female, were eventually removed from the residence,” stated the sheriff’s news release.

Deputies were assisted by Child Protective Services from Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties, UP Health Systems Ambulance, and Masonville Township Emergency Medical Services.

The case has been forwarded to the Delta County Prosecutor’s Office for review and consideration of possible charges.

No other information was being released from the sheriff’s department this morning pending further investigation into the incident.
