Esky city manager finalists named

ESCANABA — The search for the next Escanaba city manager is down to three people. Fifty-one candidates applied for the Escanaba city manager position and three finalists have been selected for interviews. The city is seeking to replace long-time City Manager Jim O’Toole, who will be retiring in July.

The Escanaba City Council has separately and individually scored each application using a point system. From that, a consolidated ranking list was compiled.

The finalists are:

Darcy Long of Amery, Wis. Long has been serving as the city administrator/zoning administrator in Amery since 2008. He has expertise in budgeting, financial management, public works and utility management, planning and zoning administration and economic development. Long attained a bachelor of science in political science from Lake Superior State University, a masters of public administration from Northern Michigan University and is a certified public manager from Texas Tech University.

Jeff Thornton of Negaunee. Thornton most recently served as the city manager of Negaunee from March 2011 to February 2016. Thornton has extensive experience in budgeting and financial planning, labor negotiations, electrical power planning, public works and utility management, planning and zoning administration and has been an active member in the Michigan Municipal League Board of Trustees, and the Upper Peninsula Municipal Managers Association. Thornton has attended Alpena Community College, Michigan State University, Lansing Community College and the Disney Institute.

William Yost of L’Anse. Yost is the owner/manager of Flat Fish USA, which is a manufacturer and distributor of water filters. Yost has extensive experience in municipal management serving communities such as the Village of Lake Odessa, Mich., Iron River, Stambaugh, and was the village manager of Baraga. Yost attained a bachelor of science degree from Michigan Technological University in Houghton and an associate degree of technology in computer-aided drafting and design from Gogebic Community College in Ironwood.

Interview dates will be scheduled for the week of March 20. Once scheduled, the date and times will be advertised, city officials said. The interviews will be opened to the public.
