‘Next UP’ – local econ club evolves

ESCANABA — A Delta County organization known formally as the “Bay Area Economic Club” has adopted the new name of, “Next UP.” According to leaders of the group, the new identity was chosen to reflect renewed dedication toward economic development, vitality and growth in Delta County. The group is accepting new membership and has announced their first event to be held on Thursday, May 23 at the Bonifas Arts Center in downtown Escanaba.

“We’re proud of the Econ Club’s past history of promoting interest and educating its members on important issues of regional and national importance,” said TJ Thomas, Next UP president and executive director of the Delta County EDA. “While we aim to continue in that tradition, we’re very excited at the opportunity to give our programing a fresh spin by highlighting personal and professional development to the forward-thinking members of Delta County.”

Next UP will kick off their 2019 schedule with an open to the public, networking social event from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at the Bonifas Arts Center. “We want to provide interested individuals with a no-pressure opportunity to drop in, learn about the group, see what’s in store for future events and at very least enjoy a cold drink, food, networking and great local live music,” said Thomas.

The social event is open at no charge and includes appetizers, Upper Hand beer and a performance by local band, “Sit Down Francis” The event will peak at 6:30 p.m. with the premiere of a video trailer announcing Next UP’s 2019 event schedule. All are welcome, and no RSVP is required.

“Delta County is the heart of the U.P. and our potential for future success is unlimited,” said County Administrator Phil Strom. “Next UP is an innovative way for our community to renew our tradition of greatness. By thinking forward and offering lifelong learning opportunities, Next UP will be critical in achieving our goal to be the next best Delta County.”

Next UP is open to all ages and backgrounds with annual membership for 2019 being offered at the promotional rate of $1 — although membership is not required to attend the group’s public events.
