ESCANABA — The annual Phi Theta Kappa Awards Luncheon, honoring the 2019 All-Michigan Academic Team, was held on Monday, March 4, at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing. Students were selected based on academic achievement, community service involvement, and leadership accomplishment. The State Academic Teams are a division of the Academic All-American Team for Community, Technical and Junior College Students, an international program sponsored annually by Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges.

Samantha Henderson and Lindsey McCann are Bay College’s representatives on the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Michigan Academic Team. They were recognized at the luncheon and will also be recognized at the Bay College Awards Dinner on Tuesday, April 23 and at Commencement on Saturday, May 11.

Henderson is finishing her second year at Bay College. She recently received her associate in arts degree and continues to work towards a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She plans to complete her bachelor’s degree through the Bay College Regional Center with Lake Superior State University and move on to pursue a law degree. She has been a tutor for various math, chemistry, and business courses, a study group facilitator, and supplemental instruction leader for general chemistry while attending Bay.

When she is not at school or focusing on her own courses, She enjoys volunteering for various events through her church, such as volunteering in the nursery and with the local art in the park festival. She also enjoys helping the junior high volleyball teams and teaching younger players the fundamentals of the game. Aside from volunteering for various activities, Samantha enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

McCann is a current student at Bay College. She will graduate this spring with an associate in science degree and plans to transfer to Michigan State University in the fall to study actuarial science. She has been a tutor at Bay College for many subjects including English, math, and other general education courses. Tutoring has not only helped her become more knowledgeable, but it has also grown her confidence and interpersonal communication skills. She hopes that she has helped her peers become more confident in their skills as well. She has worked hard to maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout college. When she isn’t at school, studying, or working, Lindsey likes to spend time with her friends, family, and beloved dogs.

The Michigan luncheon is held every year in conjunction with the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA). Besides the All-Michigan Academic Team members, luncheon attendees included community college presidents, administrators and trustees, state legislators, and Phi Theta Kappa advisors.
