Community foundation sponsors events

ESCANABA — David Williams, board chair of the Community Foundation for Delta County announced that during the week prior as well as the Community Foundation For Delta County Week (Sept.17-21) the foundation is sponsoring several events. They include:

Thursday, Sept. 13 – A food distribution from the Ruth Butler Building at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in collaboration with Weyerhaeuser. The food distribution will start at 9 a.m. and last until all food items have been distributed.

Monday, Sept. 17 – First Responders Day. All 407 First Responders in Delta County have received a $10 gift card for use at several local restaurants.

Tuesday, Sept. 18 – Delta County Veterans Day. All Delta County veterans are invited to have lunch at the Veterans Center in Escanaba from 12 to 1:30 p.m. The meal is paid for by the community foundation.

Wednesday, Sept. 19 – Senior Citizens Day. The community foundation is paying the senior citizens’ portion of the cost of the approximately 375 Meals-On-Wheels the Community Action Agency provides to senior citizens that day.

Thursday, Sept. 20 – The Community Foundation’s Legacy 25th Anniversary event is being held at the Conference Center of the Island Resort & Casino from 5 p.m. to approximately 9:15 p.m. It is sold out.

Friday, Sept. 21 – Youth Day. Area high school seniors through their individual high schools will be requested to draft a 250-word essay on volunteerism. The participating high schools will select the essay winners and notify the community foundation. The foundation will then provide or add to a scholarship for each school winner to the college, university or trade school of the winner’s choice.

“Our board of trustees are grateful to the Delta County Board of Commissioners and its chair for declaring the week of Sept. 17-21 Community Foundation for Delta County week. This year marks the 25th anniversary of our event and our board wanted to make it special. By honoring these important groups within the community we demonstrate our daily commitment to community,” Williams said.
