World’s largest swimming lesson at Y

ESCANABA — From 2005-2014, there were an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings annually in the United States — that’s about 10 deaths per day. This year, the Northern Lights YMCA is continuing our partnership with The World’s Largest Swim Lesson (WLSL) to join over 40,000 kids and adults at hundreds of locations in more than 20 countries on five continents. The event will take place on Thursday, June 21, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in the YMCA pool. This year Team WLSL will continue to move toward their goal of reaching more than one billion people with the message “Swimming Lessons Save Lives.”

This is the Northern Lights YMCA’s eighth year joining WLSL to spread the word about drowning prevention. “Learning to swim is as important to general safety as wearing a helmet when riding a bike or wearing a seat belt when riding in a car” says Megan Gouin, aquatics director. “Living in a place like Delta County where we are surrounded by water makes swimming a principal skill that every child should learn.”

Anyone interested in participating should contact Gouin at the Northern Lights YMCA, at (906)789-0005 or mgouin@nlymca.com.
