Elks, city band plan Flag Day ceremony

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Elks Lodge 354, along with the Escanaba City Band, announced plans for its annual Flag Day Program at the Karas Memorial Band Shell Thursday, June 14, in Ludington Park.

The program begins at 7 p.m. with patriotic musical selections by the Escanaba City Band, directed by Bruce Cassell, followed at 7:30 p.m. with the Elks Flag Day Ceremony.

Of special interest will be an appearance by the Remnants Barbershop Chorus under the direction of Ed Boehm, who will sing patriotic numbers as part of the program.

The program will be performed by the officers of the Elks, led by Exalted Ruler Steve Victorson. The “History of the Flag” will be presented by Elk member Philip Strom and the “Response” presented by Elk member Jimmy Bruce.

Scoutmaster Chad Caldwell and Boy Scouts of America Troop 466 of Gladstone will assist with the “History of the Flag”. Free handouts, including miniature United States flags, will be distributed to the public.

Old, damaged and worn flags ready for retirement can be brought to the ceremony or deposited in the blue barrel marked for retired flags located behind the Elks Lodge at 510 Ludington St.

Anyone interested in becoming an Elk or re-instating in the Elks should call 786 2294.
