Program details history of paper mill

ESCANABA — The Delta County Historical Society will offer the second program of the 2018 Winter Outreach Series on Wednesday, March 21. Dr. Charles Lindquist, president of the society, will describe the early history of the Escanaba Paper Company in an illustrated talk. His history of the company begins with the Escanaba electric trolley car company’s problem of lacking electrical power to run its track past the Escanaba River and into Gladstone in 1906 and ends with the Escanaba Paper Company’s importance in 1951.

On Wednesday, April 25, archivist Karen Lindquist will present a photographic tour of Escanaba houses in the 1930s. The program features houses photographed for the city of Escanaba between 1937 and 1939, a project that may have been financed by the WPA.

Both programs, presented in partnership with the Escanaba Public Library, begin at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Escanaba City Hall. They are free and open to the public.
