LSSU Escanaba Center awards scholarship

ESCANABA — Lake Superior State University has awarded its Escanaba Regional Center Scholarship for the semester that begins in January to Bethany Lemerand of Escanaba. Lemerand is earning a baccalaureate degree in criminal justice-corrections with a law enforcement minor through LSSU’s regional center at Bay College in Escanaba.

“It is much appreciated to have the opportunity to receive a scholarship from the local community to assist me in furthering my education,” said Lemerand in garnering the cash award.

Funding for the award was provided through an endowment established in 2015 by the Mead Paper Company, then headquartered in Escanaba, Mich. Candidates must be admitted LSSU students taking at least six credits per semester through the Escanaba Regional Center, with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Financial need may be a consideration.

“I’m excited to have this scholarship opportunity for the regional center students,” said Heidi Berg, director of the LSSU Escanaba Regional Center. “This is just one more example of how LSSU makes bachelor degrees more accessible to location-bound working adults.”

Escanaba Regional Center students can earn LSSU baccalaureate degrees in nursing, business, criminal justice, general studies, and early childhood education and nursing, without ever having to leave Bay’s Escanaba main campus or branch center in Iron Mountain, Mich.
