Rep. LaFave backs dual enrollment bill

LANSING — The Michigan House approved legislation supported by Rep. Beau LaFave to give Upper Peninsula high school students in districts along the Michigan state border improved access to dual enrollment options in Wisconsin.

“We have many respectable colleges and technical centers in the Upper Peninsula, but unfortunately there are sections along the Menominee River boundary where the most reasonable options are just across the border,” said LaFave. “I’ll always support our U.P. education system, just as I will wanting the best education for each and every student.”

The legislation amends the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act with the specific stipulation that the out-of-state educational facility must be within 20 miles of the shared border for students enrolled in a public, charter or private school district.

“My hope is that our border school districts will look to work with small Wisconsin colleges to establish in-state costs,” said LaFave, of Iron Mountain. “Post-secondary and dual-enrollment programs are opportunities for our hard-working students to advance themselves in their education and prepare for life.”

House Bill 4735, sponsored by state Rep. Aaron Miller of Sturgis, advances to the Senate for its consideration.
