Escanaba library to host U.P. Book Tour

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Public Library will present an evening with authors Kathleen Heideman, Lynn Fay (L.E. Kimball), April Lindala, Jillena Rose and Eric Torgersen. The authors are visiting the Escanaba Public Library on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. and will be reading from their work and signing copies of their book, “And Here: 100 Years of Upper Peninsula Writing, 1917-2017,” which includes poetry, short fiction, and novel excerpts in a rich anthology of work of Upper Peninsula authors past and present.

The authors are visiting the Escanaba Public Library as part of the U.P. Michigan Book Tour. Tour organizer Ronald Riekki is an award-winning poet, novelist, and playwright and since 2010, has headed the U.P. Book Tour, which has scheduled literary events throughout the state, particularly in rural communities.

The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. The event will be held in the library. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

Lynn Fay is a widely published writer (under the name L.E. Kimball) whose stories have appeared in top literary journals including the Alaska Quarterly Review, the Massachusetts Review, Lynx Eye, Orchid, and Washington Square. Her first novel, “A Good High Place,” was published 2010 by Northern Illinois University. Her essays have been published in dozens of venues such as Exceptional Parent and The Detroit News.

She lives off the grid northwest of Tahquamenon Falls on the Little Two Hearted River.

Kathleen M. Heideman is a writer, artist and environmentalist working in the Upper Peninsula. Her newest book of poetry is “Psalms of the Early Anthropocene” (Winter Cabin Books, 2017); her work appears in the forthcoming anthologies Maiden Voyage (Marquette Poets Circle, 2017) and Isle Royale from the A.I.R. (Caffeinated Press, 2017). Heideman is a fellow of the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists & Writers Program, and the recipient of numerous artist residencies with watersheds, forests, private foundations and the National Park Service.

April E. Lindala (Grand River Six Nations) is the director of the Center for Native American Studies and an associate professor of English at Northern Michigan University. Lindala served as co-editor for the photo book mikwendaagozi to be remembered that showcases the photography of Anishinaabe youth from Marquette County. Lindala’s non-fiction essay, “For the Healing for All Women” appears in The Way North: Collected Upper Peninsula New Works [Wayne State University Press], which was recognized as a Michigan Notable Book of 2014.

Jillena Rose earned her MFA in poetry from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina in 2006. She is currently administrative head for the College of Arts and Sciences at Lake Superior State University. She has two book length collection of poetry: Light As Sparrows and Cedar Cathedral. She is the non-fiction editor for the international journal, “Border Crossing” and was a finalist for the title of Poet Laureate of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in 2014. J

Eric Torgersen holds a BA in German literature from Cornell and an MFA in poetry from Iowa. After two years in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia, he taught creative writing for 40 years, 38 of them at CMU, before retiring in 2008. He has published eight books and chapbooks of poetry.
