ESCANABA — Chef registration is open for the upcoming United Way Soup’r Chili Challenge, which will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba. Entries will be accepted in two divisions: Restaurant and Non-Restaurant.

Chefs must cook eight to 10 gallons of soup or chili, either in their own commercial kitchen (Restaurant Division) or on-site at the Ruth Butler Building (Non-Restaurant Division). For the Non-Restaurant chefs, all prep work and cooking must be done on-site (teams of up to four people are allowed). Restaurant Division chefs may cook in their own commercial kitchens and transport their soup or chili to the fairgrounds.

All chefs are invited to decorate a booth with a Yooper theme. Dressing in costume is encouraged to create a fun atmosphere for the event, which serves as the kickoff for the United Way’s fall fundraising campaign.

Prizes for the best soup and chili in each division will be awarded by a panel of judges and by public vote. The people also will vote for best booth.

There is a registration fee. Chefs may register online at www.uwdelta.org or contact the United Way office at 786-3736 or julie@uwdelta.org. Inquiries also may be made on Facebook (look up United Way of Delta County).
