Body of boating accident victim found

MUNISING — State Police have recovered the body of a person who went missing after a boating accident on Lake Superior Sunday. Troopers from the Michigan State Police Munising Detachment were dispatched at 6 p.m. to Autrain Township for a report of a boating accident on Lake Superior. A pontoon boat took on a large wave as it was on the south side of Autrain Island. All seven occupants on the boat fell into the water. Six of the occupants were rescued and treated for hypothermia. The seventh occupant went toward the boat and has not been seen since. The boat was recovered and a search for the last occupant began.

Alger County and State Police dive team searched the waters and found the body of the missing person Monday afternoon. The identity of the persons involved was not being immediately released.

Assisting agencies include Alger County Sheriff’s Department, Pictured Rocks National Park Marine Patrol, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
