Fishing museum to showcase artisans

MENOMINEE — The rich history of 19th and 20th century life displayed at West Shore Fishing Museum will come alive on Sunday, July 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. CDT. Heritage Crafts Day will showcase artisans and volunteers demonstrating skills and practices of bygone eras. This event marks the 20-year anniversary of the first efforts to restore the Bailey property. Light refreshments will be available.

The spacious grounds of the museum will ring with the sounds of blacksmith George Potvin of 10 Mile Creek Forge in Bark River. Curt Williams will display a 1931 Model A snowmobile used for ice fishing. Area wood carvers will demonstrate and sell hand carved items.

Shirley Pisani of Riverstone Healing Arts will explain and sell handmade soaps. Tim and Faye Presley, Skandia, will demonstrate old-fashioned sauerkraut preparation. Susan Bork and friends will spin wool yarn; Marlene Williams will crochet, and volunteers will churn butter.

Kathy Coppock will teach a clay pot painting class for kids. The charge for this class is $7 and no preregistration is required. Participants will have access to all elements needed to make and take home a unique garden decoration. Adults should accompany children six and under. Perennial plants from the museum gardens are still for sale, and the Welcome Center Gift Shop offers many vintage treasures.

Wild Rivers Invasive Species Coalition will be on hand with informational literature. At 2 p.m. Lindsay Peterson will lead an educational walk on the museum’s expanded trails to identify and discuss invasive species.

This event and the West Shore Fishing Museum celebrate life on Green Bay waters in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on commercial fishing, a major industry in the region. The restored Bailey home, exhibit buildings, commercial fishing boat displays, gardens, and nature trails provide a pleasant and relaxing step back into local history.

The museum operates on donations — there is no admission or parking charge. It is located off Highway M-35 inside Bailey Park, 15 miles north of Menominee or seven miles south of Cedar River. Drive into Bailey Park to enter the museum grounds.
