Work of many hands makes fair possible

ESCANABA — Each year a myriad of people work to organize all the activities that go on during fair week. Fair organizers learned a long time ago that many hands make the work lighter. They’ve applied that to all the special events that go on. As it all comes together and everything happens on time, as it should, the work of many hands is invisible.

Ladies Day is held on Friday. It features a program of speakers, the 2018 Fair Cookbook, “swag” bags of promotional items, raffles and give a ways. The days also showcases two contests. This year’s baking contest will feature the theme of Michigan beef, and the quilt block contest will focus on Barns. Committees for each contest will send out applications, present and judge the entries and give out ribbons. As a matter of course, they will track everything and do it again next year. Finally, there will be a committee that will gather recipes and prepare the 2019 U.P. State Fair Ladies Day cookbook..

Each year over 400 women from throughout the Upper Peninsula will attend the program. It is an annual favorite, all thanks to the volunteers and sponsors who work throughout the year to not only make it happen again the following year, but to make it even better!

Each year during Seniors Day a Wellness Trade Fair is offered. This Wellness Fair provides an opportunity for businesses to offer helpful information to the seniors attending. Agencies like Community Action’s RSVP and Foster Grandparents, Public Health of Delta and Menominee, and UPCAP are on hand to share information about their programs. Businesses like Humana Insurance, Northern Orthotics or Miracle Ear are there to answer questions seniors may have. Christian Park, Whispering Pines, and other care providers will also have a booth, as well as many others.

This gathering of so many organizations and businesses in one location provides an opportunity for seniors to have many of their questions answered.

These events are only two of many that are organized by members of volunteer committees that work throughout the week at the fair and continue to work together throughout the year to make sure that your U.P. State Fair experience is the best it can be.

See you at the U.P. State Fair ~ Michigan’s only state fair!
