ESCANABA — The grand opening of Dress Up, 1206 Ludington St., formerly known as Beautiful Beginnings, was held recently.

Jody Bugay purchased Beautiful Beginnings from creator Luann Lindquist in 1993 and moved the shop inventory to downtown Escanaba.

With over two decades of dressing up the community, came the new name Dress Up.

“My daughter came up with the name when she was 10 years old, and  the name just felt right,” said Bugay.

With the new name in the works, construction began in 2016 with a facade grant from the city of Escanaba. The old store front came down, new windows, doors, and new tile to greet footsteps coming in. Dress Up was starting to emerge.

Dress Up still carries the latest in bridesmaids dresses, mothers, prom, homecoming and tuxedos. The formal bridal gowns (with long trains) will be liquidated to make room for fashion dresses, shoes, destination gowns, and coming soon, handbags.

According to Bugay, here was a need for more casual dresses, Customers ordering from websites that promise a beautiful dress at a great price, are quickly disappointed, because it doesn’t fit, doesn’t look like the picture which they ordered from, and can not get their money back.

“Most customers still want to try on, and want great customer service,” added  Becky Townsend, manager.

The transformation followed into the main floor, the dropped ceiling  removed to expose the vintage tin ceiling, with only minor repairs needed.

“The transformation has been a process, and a little confusing to the public, the building looks so different they thought I moved, “ said Bugay.

Dress Up takes before or after- hour appointments. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for new arrivals and upcoming events. Jody, Joe and their daughter, Ava, reside in Gladstone.
