American Legion meetings and events announced

ESCANABA — The Upper Peninsula Association of American Legion Posts (UPAALP) asks Legionaires to mark their calendars with the following meeting dates and times:

— The 2019 11th District and 12th District Spring Meetings will both be held on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

The 11th District Meeting will be at Engadine Post 290. It will begin at 11 a.m. EDT. Lunch at a nominal cost will be provided. The 11th District Commander is Wendy Sexton.

The 12th District Meeting will be held at Hancock Post 186. The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. EDT. Lunch at a nominal cost will be served after the meeting. The 12th District Commander is Wendy Retzloff.

— The Annual UPAALP Legislative Dinner will be held at Post 50 on River Ave. in Iron Mountain Saturday, April 27. Members are asked to mark their calendars and plan to attend. Call Post 50 at 906-774-5797 or 906-282-1474 to reserve tickets until April 22.

Because the American Legion wants to impress upon U.P. legislators that it expects them to back veteran issues, every post is asked to send at least one or two members with their Legion caps. The dinner is open to the Sons of the American Legion as well as American Legion Auxiliary member. A full slate of our elected officials is expected to attend.

Cocktails will be served at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6:30 p.m. CDT.

— The UPAA (Auxiliary) Spring Meeting will be held on Saturday, May 4 at Powers Post 244. Lunch will be at noon CDT, with the meeting to follow at 1 p.m.

— The 2019 UPAALP Summer Convention will be held at Post146 in Menominee on June 14 and 15. Further information on the Summer Convention will be sent out at a later date.

Do you have a Legion member that is deserving of recognition for longtime American Legion service in your Post? If so, please contact Carl Morrison for information on nominating that person for U.P. Legionnaire of the Year. Contact Carl at 906-360-7076 for more information.

The Legionnaire of the Year for 2018 was awarded to Gary Lane of Stambaugh Post 21 at the U.P. Summer Convention in Iron Mountain. The committee is looking for potential awardees at the summer convention.
