Volunteers needed to place veteran’s flags

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone American Legion Post 71 is seeking volunteers to help place flags on veterans’ graves on Friday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone. Flags will be placed in honor of Memorial Day.

Meet the Bishop event June 3 in Marquette

MARQUETTE — Meet the Bishop Day Mass & Dinner, hosted by the Most Reverend John F. Doerfler and sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, is scheduled for Sunday, June 3. The event will begin with a Mass at St. Louis the King Church, 264 Silver Creek Road, Marquette, at 4 p.m. ET, followed by a catered dinner in the parish hall.

The event is open to individuals with disabilities and their families/caregivers. NARFE May meeting planned for tomorrow

MARQUETTE — The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) Chapter 1900 will meet at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 23. The meeting will be in Room B of the Marquette Senior Center, on the lower level of City Hall, 300 W. Baraga in Marquette. Members may enter from Spring Street, behind City Hall. Spring Street is one-way from east to west.

Ken Andersen, chapter second vice president, will update the group on the national-level NARFE elections. For the first time, all NARFE members can vote on the national organization’s officers and ballot issues. Information and ballots appear in the June 2018 NARFE magazine. Paper or online ballots must be received by midnight June 30.

NARFE Chapter 1900 includes members from the Marquette, Escanaba, Rapid River, Ontonagon, Houghton and Hancock areas. For additional information please call 906-475-0362.

Local senior centers to honor older Americans

ESCANABA — In celebration of Older Americans Month in May, Community Action Agency Senior Centers will provide cake and coffee 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. local time Wednesday, May 23.

“Our senior centers are a vital place for many area residents, and we just want to take this opportunity to celebrate our older residents and show them how much we appreciate them,” said CAA Senior Services Director Sally Kidd.

The usual meals will be served at the centers on May 23. If senior citizens would like to also go to the center and also eat lunch that day, they are asked to call in their meal reservation at least a day ahead of time.

Sit-n-fit exercise class

ESCANABA — Fitness chair exercises to improve strength, stretching, balance, flexibility and muscle will be held every Monday and Friday at 11a.m. at the Escanaba Senior Center. Sign in at the office. The event is free.

Weekly bridge meetings
