Garden Historical Society opens

Courtey photo The opening of the Garden Peninsula Historical Society will be on Wednesday, June 7, at 11 a.m. Normal operating hours are Wednesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The schoolhouse museum holds family history notebooks, photos, and numerous exhibits pertaining to the peninsula and is located in Garden adjacent to the post office. Included in the exhibit is the image at left. Elkhorn Station was built in the early 1920’s at the Big Spring Corner. Built by Joel Savage and his son Leslie, it is now the junction of M149 and 442. Elkhorn Station operated as a grocery store, restaurant and gas station. Shown in the photo are Joel, Rose, Dorothy, Lucille and Marie Savage. An added attraction were the animals kept in the area behind the store. They included bear, deer, bobcat, and coyote.
