Diaper drive assists PSDC
ESCANABA — The new year is off to a great start for families who receive assistance through Pregnancy Services of Delta County (PSDC), thanks to Holy Name Catholic School, and from Delta County Credit Union, Great Lakes First Federal Credit Union, Peninsula Federal Credit Union, and U.P.State Credit Union.
Over 2,000 diapers were collected during recent diaper drives, along with baby wipes and articles of baby clothing. “It is wonderful to see our community coming together for life,” stated Audra Buchmiller, executive director for PSDC. “The support shown by students and faculty, and credit union staff and members, is overwhelming!” Pregnancy Services of Delta County is a local crisis pregnancy and parenting resource center. Their free and confidential services include: life -affirming options counseling, educational earn while you learn parenting program, man-2-man mentoring classes dealing with fatherhood led by a male mentor, post-abortion support, family resource room, pregnancy testing, and sexual integrity and abstinence teaching
“Through support, education, and encouragement, we are equipping parents with the tools they need to in order to better parent their children and provide for their family. Additionally, we refer clients to community resources that may be able to help them with other needs such as medical assistance, food, shelter, and placing their unborn child for adoption.”
Through their Earn While You Learn program, families earn necessities such as diapers, wipes, clothing, cribs and other baby items. Free baby food, formula, and maternity clothing is also available as donated. This program promotes accountability as clients must attend parenting, wellness, or life skills sessions with a mentor in exchange for the Baby Bucks they use to ‘pay’ for the items they need
“A simple act of kindness towards someone in crisis lends support and encouragement. It helps them to realize that they are not alone on the journeys of an unplanned pregnancy, and continuing parenthood. It gives them hope,” shares Buchmiller. “The gifts of time, talent, and treasure that we receive from people in our community,-especially our regular supporters and volunteers- reflect that kindness, and a willingness to reach out and help women and families experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, as well as those with young children.”
