Project Connect honors King
ESCANABA — On Monday, Jan. 16, thousands of organizations across the country lead Americans in the nation’s largest day of civic engagement, the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. With an emphasis on creating opportunity for all, Americans of all ages and backgrounds in all 50 states will re-commit themselves as citizens by volunteering in service to one another.
In honor of Dr. King’s life, Project Connect in sponsorship with the MDS Community Action Agency, the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, Foster Grandparent Program, Senior Companion Program and in partnership with the United Way of Delta County, collected items to be made into care packages for local at-risk or homeless individuals. Such items that were collected were: personal hygiene products, paper products, nonperishable snacks, winter gloves, and hats. The volunteers packed 108 bags, which will be delivered to at-risk or homeless individuals in Delta, Menominee and Schoolcraft counties. This event could not have been a success without our volunteers and the many agency and individual donations.
Project Connect is continuing to collect donations of the much needed items throughout the year. The next donation drive will be geared toward winter jackets, hats, gloves, scarves, and socks for our Project Connect Event in the Fall of 2017. Donations can be dropped off at Community Action Agency, 507 1st Ave North, Escanaba or at the Escanaba Senior Center, 225 N. 21st Street, Escanaba.
